摘要:In the late sixteenth and early seventeenth century, Catholic students in the Dutch Republic faced a particularly difficult dilemma. On the one hand, Dutch law forbade them to study at Catholic universities in the Southern Netherlands on pain of heavy financial penalties; on the other hand, the Dutch mission church condemned enrolment at a Protestant university in the Dutch Republic as an act of heresy, to be punished with excommunication. This article explores which motives Catholic students themselves gave preference to in choosing a university. In doing so, this article wishes to contribute to our understanding of the early modern Catholic experience.
