The aim of this article is to present the modes of clinical intervention experimented by Sigmund Freud, Sándor Ferenczi and Donald Woods Winnicott, in order to meet the demands imposed by the different frames of psychic distress. Through a historical-critical path, an effort was made to deconstruct the idea, still widespread in the psychoanalytic field, that the clinic is mainly an interpretive exercise. From the impasses experienced by Freud along the case known as "The Wolf-Man", the advent of the active technique was seen first; afterwards, there was the witnessing of the inauguration, by Ferenczi, of a clinical style that emphasized the relaxation principle and neo-catharsis, in direct dialogue with the problem of psychic working-through (Dürcharbeitung) discriminated by Freud; finally, what was seen was the development, carried out by Winnicott, of the clinical and metapsychological features of regression into dependence and of shared playing.
