摘要:This study examines the current state of Distance Education (DE) at the Federal University of Santa Catarina (UFSC). This is a case study carried out with the coordinators of distance education majors and managers at UFSC. Its contributions are based on fact that this study seeks to describe relevant information for the improvement of this teaching modality by examining this case study. As a result, it was possible to identify a scenario characterized by a fear of the possibility of failure of DE in Federal Institutions of Higher Education (FIHE), in addition to a lack of agreement on some issues among the interviewees. But, on the other hand, as a consensus, there is an extreme need to change the vision of Distance Education at the university by the management of UFSC as well as the Ministry of Education / Coordinating Body for the Improvement of Higher Education Personnel (MEC / Capes), based on institutionalization of this teaching modality so that it starts to be formally and structurally integrated into the university. Impasses in the relationships between the agents of this process - poles – the FIHE – and MEC/Capes are also often cited.

But, on the other hand, as a consensus, the extreme need to change the vision of Distance Education at the university by the Management of UFSC and the Ministry of Education / Coordination for the Improvement of Higher Education Personnel (MEC / CAPES), based on institutionalization of this teaching modality so that it starts to formally and structurally integrate the university. Difficulties in the relationships between the agents of this process - poles - IFES – MEC/CAPES were also mentioned.
