摘要:The present article aims at a comparative analysis of comparative idioms (comparisons), which represent a large subgroup of multi-word compounds. The researched material proves that the primary function of comparative idioms is their extraordinary expressiveness. They mainly emphasize the description of human characteristics and patterns of behavior, both positive and negative. In both studied languages, comparative idioms play the same role, which consists of expressiveness and, through the imagery, leads to a better exploration, perception, understanding and recording of reality. Polish and German comparisons are consistent with each other in this regard because, despite the variety of subcultures, including habits and cus-toms, different historical development of their own literature, different faiths and economic development, as well as the different evolutions of the two languages, they exhibit many simi-larities to each on the three studied levels.
