摘要：A massiva quantidade de dicionários disponíveis no mercado demanda dos professores de língua estrangeira um conhecimento metalexicográfico para que possam selecionar as obras a serem utilizadas de acordo com os seus objetivos específicos e tipos de público diferentes. Em meio a tal cenário, este artigo visa a refletir sobre como o docente pode avaliar as obras lexicográficas de que dispõe. Guiado pela indagação sobre o que aprendizes de línguas estrangeiras procuram em dicionários monolíngues da língua-alvo, o trabalho descreve quatro obras, o American Heritage Dictionary, o Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English, o Longman Lexicon of Contemporary English e o Macmillan English Dictionary for Advanced Learners of American English. Cada uma é entendida como representante de um tipo, e seu exame visa demonstrar o que cada dicionário possui de singular e o que pode proporcionar ao ensino do idioma inglês como língua estrangeira. Conclui-se, após o cotejo das obras, que um reconhecimento de cada tipo de dicionário e de suas potencialidades é fundamental para que o professor identifique o material lexicográfico que melhor pode suprir as demandas de seus usuários. Além disso, destaca-se que um tal reconhecimento também pode ser aproveitado para atividades diretas de ensino, com manuseio das obras pelos estudantes em sala de aula.
其他摘要：The massive quantity of dictionaries available on the market demands that foreign language teachers have lexicographic knowledge so that they can select the dictionaries according to their specific objectives and different types of students. The purpose of this study was to discuss how teachers can evaluate the lexicographic material available to them. Guided by the question as to what foreign language students look for in a target-language monolingual dictionary, four dictionaries were examined: the American Heritage Dictionary, the Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English, the Longman Lexicon of Contemporary English, and the Macmillan English Dictionary for Advanced Learners of American English. Each was chosen for being representative of a specific type of dictionary, and was analyzed for its uniqueness and for what it could offer (English) foreign language teaching. Result of this study indicate that it is important for the teacher to be aware of the characteristics of each type of dictionary to be able to identify which best fulfils the user’s needs. It is also important to mention that this knowledge may be useful in direct learning activities, with students handling the material in the classroom.
