  • 摘要:Background Junior doctors are increasingly choosing out-of-programme (OOP) activities over specialty training. OOP activities in research or clinical skill learning have been demonstrated to support clinicians’ continuing professional development (CPD). However, the benefits of OOPs as a planned career break (OOPC) have not been specifically investigated. This study evaluates reflections of Clinical Educator (CE) posts at Buckingham University Medical School (UBMS) to explore their perceived value and impact on junior doctor careers. Methods 32 CEs were asked to reflect on the impact of their experience at UBMS on their current roles using a Likert scale and free-form written comments. Questions and comments revolved around the three themes of: “CPD opportunities opened by the CE role”; “The CE role and specialty application”; “Effect of the CE role on subsequent CPD in medical education”; and “Impact of the CE role and medical education qualification on current role and teaching opportunities”. Results Before the CE post, 52% of participants had obtained only a primary medical qualification (PMQ) and had minimal medical education experience. During the CE post, 65% of CEs obtained a qualification in medical education and 60% of educators continued in clinical work. 80% of CEs subsequently returned to clinical roles with 88% reported the experience to have a valuable positive influence on both their specialty training and 61% reported a valuable influence on their interview performance. Over half continue in clinical teaching roles. Likewise, 68% of those pursuing medical education as a career also maintained some clinical responsibility and cited their OOP experience as impacting positively on their training, teaching, and leadership skills. Conclusion This is the first study to show that an OOPC as a CE can enhance both the CPD of the CE and the quality of subsequent specialty clinical positions with an overall improvement in patient care.
