摘要：Archival maps are an invaluable source of information about the state of geographical environment. They are the primary research material for the analysis of changes in spatial characteristics of the environment. A prerequisite to carry out a reliable analysis is an exact match between archival maps and contemporary cartographic materials and to estimate the error of that match. The most effective way to do it nowadays is to use GIS software. The aim of the work is to present and discuss georeferencing methods of archival paper maps using GIS, in suc a way as to allow precise comparison with contemporary reference layers. Two alternative georeferencing methods for the maps based and not based on a geodetic network are described. Georeferencing of archival maps is discussed on the example of two Austrian military map series of Galicia conducted by the MGI (Militärgeographisches Institut) and completed in 1783 and 1863 respectively.
