摘要：This paper presents an example of the study based on two vegetation maps (historical and present-day) used to determine past-present differences in the nature of plant communities and the general directions to the environmental transformations taking place in the 50-year period along the middle Vistula river valley. A particular emphasis was put on the methodological part of the cartographic analysis. The vegetation maps turned out to be a good source for research on environmental transformations. The use of vegetation maps gives much more possibilities of changes identification and interpretation in comparison with analyses of topographical maps or aerial photographs. Difficulties mainly occur at the preparation stage and are connected with the generalization of legend units that leads to the contents impoverishment and limits of interpretation possibilities. Precise analysis may be also impeded by inaccuracy of the historical map transformation to a digital form caused by errors in the interpretation and determination of vegetation units borders.
