摘要：The restructuring process of the banking systems in the Central and Eastern European countries has created the premises for foreign banks to extend their activity also in this part of Europe. A lot of factors could explain the interest of foreign banks to invest in banking market of these countries. Among these factors we can mention the growth potential of the banking systems in the Central and Eastern Europe and the limited possibilities of foreign banks to develop the traditional activity lines in their home countries. Therefore, at the present, the foreign involvement in the Central and Easterm European banking systems is high. To a great extent, this phenomenon is due to the privatization process of public banks which took off from central banks. The high level of foreign involvement in the Central and Eastern European countries contrasts with the situation in the euro area where foreign ownership is more reduced.
