摘要:Character development can be done through every subject or education unit, every curricular or extracurricular activity. This article attempts to describe the profile of Indonesian teaching materials in elementary schools, the needs of students and teachers in a thematic and characterbased Indonesian textbook, and the prototype of the thematic and character-based Indonesian textbook for elementary schools through children's literature. This is a research and development study applied to the field of education. The subjects of the study were students and teachers of elementary schools in the cities of Ungaran and Semarang. The results of the study show that: (1) 67 teachers (72%) stated that they needed new Indonesian textbooks and 26 teachers (28%) stated that they did not need new Indonesian textbooks; (2) 14 teachers (15%) assumed that Indonesian textbooks could help teachers to teach character education to the students; (3) 49 teachers (53%) assumed that the current Indonesian textbooks did not help the teaching of character education to the students; and (4) 20 teachers (22%) thought that the Indonesian textbooks could not facilitate the teaching of character education to the students.
