摘要:In many countries of western Europe children of immigrants tend to do poorly at school. They also fail and drop out more often than the native-born pupils. The main cause of this problem is seen particularly in the socioeconomic status of the immigrants' families, their cultural background - different from the majority culture - and lack of the official language skills (the language of instruction). But there are many other factors that may influence the academic achievement of immigrant children. That is for example the whole process of emigration and adaptation in the new society, limited formal education in their native countries, limited educational background, different curriculum in their native countries etc. All in all,the children of immigrants are educationally disadvantaged and in comparison with the native-born population they have to cope with many serious handicaps. I have visited four primary schools in the Czech Republic that are attended by the immigrant children . As a result of this I introduce the following hypothesis: the children of immigrants do not have lower socio-economic status than the native-born population in the Czech Republic. The academic achievement of immigrant pupils is not worse than the academic achievement of the native-born pupils in the Czech Republic. The families of immigrants who intend to live in the Czech Republic are interested in education of their children. Czech schools do not have significant problems with xenophobia or ethnic conflicts. Teachers do not use educational methods based on the principle of multicultural education. The Czech schools have to cope with the specific needs of immigrant children but the issue of immigrant education has not been studied in the Czech Republic yet.
