摘要:The development of geo-information implies changes in the perception of cartography. Cartographic image is the best way to present spatial data, phenomena,or results of analyses. The method and form of imaging depends on the purpose of given presentation, its addressees, technical capacities, performance time, author’s know-how and skills. The diversity of bases and tools and their accessibility results in a quantitative growth in the number of available products. Unfortunately, an evident decline in the quality of works is observed in parallel with the increase in the volume of produced presentations. The essence of geo-information lies in high-quality data usable for a range of purposes, hence the understandable emphasis on the quality of databases and their modeling;still, bearing in mind the application of cartographic principles and listening to reason, demands due diligence in approaching presentations. Relevant professionalism is required at every stage of development of an image;for that purpose,it is necessary to maintain the ancillary hierarchy in geo-informatics: computer science – geodetic surveying – other trades. Image is a simplification of reality and phenomena, the final element of uncertainty in geo-information. Therefore, each visualisation should be made available along with the relevant characteristics. Cartography is not a mere science or a method of data processing, but also an art,an element of the cultural and intellectual legacy of mankind. An appropriate compromise between technology and art,the propagation and application of the principles of map editing to the widest possible extent – such are the odds of digital cartography.
