摘要：The article studies the possibility of using GPL/LGPL-licensed software for students education in GIS classes. The benefits from replacing commercial software its with freeware equivalents are presented. The rules of using open source software are described briefly,and differences between GPL and LGPL licenses are pointed out. Few proposals for GPL programs are put forward: GRASS,QuantumGIS,ILWIS,R and Scilab,with their general use description. In addition,a sample set of exercises for students is proposed,which can be done with the freeware. The set includes among others the composing of thematic map,coordinates transformation,topographic map and orthophotomap comparison,roads geometry correction,adding reference to raster map, plane base preparation and raster and vector spatial data analysis.
