  • 摘要:The bench press exercise exists in multiple forms including the machine and free weight bench press. It is not clear though how each mode differs in its effect on repetition performance at heavy and/or light load during sets. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to compare repetition consistency during a Smith machine and free weight bench press at lower (50% 1 repetition maximum [1RM]) and higher (80% 1RM) intensities in trained and untrained young men. METHOD: A total of 33 healthy strength-trained (aged 22.9±0.9 years,BMI=25.0±0.5 kg/m2,n=17) and untrained (aged 21.8±0.8 years,BMI=22.2±0.5 kg/m2,n=16) young adult men volunteered to participate in this study. Two weeks prior to the start of the experiment, participants performed a familiarization session with the resistance exercise equipment. During the familiarization session, correct lifting and breathing technique were taught and practiced using submaximal and near-maximal loads. In two separate days,1RM was assessed according to ACSM guidelines in the bench press with free weight and Smith machine (1). Four consecutive sets the bench press were performed with 50 and 80% of 1RM and with a 3-minute rest interval between sets for free weight and Smith machine. All tests were counterbalanced and randomly assigned. A four-way (split-plot) ANOVA with repeated measures was used to test the effects of forms (free weight/machine),loads (heavy/light) and training experience on the sustainability of repetitions during the sets. RESULTS: 1RM performance for bench press for free weight and machine were significantly higher in the trained than in the untrained group (p<0.05). There were significant effects of bench press forms (F=58.03),loads (F=745.93),sets (F=357.06) and experience (F=5.33) on the repetitions (p<0.05). Besides, there were significant effects of interaction among bench press forms, loads and sets (F=12.12;p<0.00). However, the change of repetitions during four sets in both forms with heavy and light loads were similar for the groups (F=0.25;p>0.05). DISCUSSION: The previous studies did not compare free weight and machine for the effects of heavy/light load and training experience on four consecutive sets. The consecutive sets caused to decrease in repetition, besides in free weight exercise increase in repetition than smith machine in the both loads. It can be said that the free weight more suitable than smith machine for the effective bench press exercise in the light and /or heavy loads for trained and untrained subjects.
