摘要:The city of Ilhéus, located in the Ilhéus-Itabuna micro-region, has been losing population since 2000, following what has been happening in its municipality since 1991. However, what we can notice through direct observation, confirmed by orbit images, is that this city is growing territorially. What is happening so that the municipality and the city of Ilhéus are losing population? And, contradictorily, why is there growing the number of residential buildings, condominiums and closed lots? Also, in which directions is the city of Ilhéus growing? The answer these questions was obtained based on population data (1980-2016), Atlas of Human Development in Brazil (2013), mapping of horizontal condominiums and apartment towers built after 2000 and interviews directed at local realtors. Thus, in identifying Ilheus' main growth axes, the consequences of periurbanization and socio-spatial self-segregation of the population were discussed through closed condominiums. It is detected that Ilhéus moved from the agrarian-export model to the urban and services, without having passed through the urban-industrial model, with very serious consequences for its population. The city, which has not had the great population density throughout its history, marks the industrial cities, passes to the city extended and dispersed in road corridors.
