  • 摘要:This paper aims to survey the characteristics of homicide victims in Itabuna between 1990 and 2015, and to verify if there is any discrimination in race or gender among homicide victims in this city. For this purpose, secondary data was collected in reference to homicides on three geographical scales (Brazil, Bahia and Itabuna), with the intent of comparison and comprehension of the phenomenon. The data on homicides and criminal records were extracted from the Mortality Information System (Sistema de Informação sobre Mortalidade – SIM, in Portuguese), the 2014 Violence Map, along with information obtained at the 6th Regional Coordinating Body for the Countryside Police of Itabuna (COOPIN). Charts were also created with the profiles of the victims and rates of homicidal violence in the city for the established years. Certain patterns were identified as well their correlation with social exclusion, color/race and gender, and the reasons for these patterns were investigated. The results show that over 70% of the population of Itabuna is black (black or dark-skinned), and of the total number of homicide victims, over 70% are black (data from 2010). The most frequent victims are young black men, aged between 15 and 29, representing 80% of victims. Therefore, this segment of society sees a greater incidence of violence, indicating recurring discrimination in homicides among the population. Thus, public policies should be aimed at this segment of the population, considering variables in skin color, age and gender.
