  • 摘要:Tragedy is one ofthoseterms which refers both to aspecificliterary genreand to a generalworld view. Thetwo meaningsareto be distinguished butcannot perhaps befully separated sincetheambiguous relation between artand life underwrites the powerand significance oftheform. At the sametimethis relation hasa differentmeaningwhen approached fromeither side. Lawrence’s remark that“tragedy ought really to bea great kick atmisery”sitsat the heart ofthisambiguity. Itseems to bea Nietzschean affirmation oflifethrough thetragicexperience;an affirmation for which Yeats’s poem“Lapis Lazuli” provides perhaps the moststriking exampleinEnglish. Yet Lawrence was hostileto the mode ofaestheticism represented byNietzscheand Yeats. Wherethey assimilatelifeinto art, heconstantly distrustsany art, even an affirmative one, thatclaimsa privileged standpoint on life.
