摘要：Partindo de uma inquietação surgida nas entrevistas que resultaram no Atlas Linguístico Topodinâmico e Topoestático do Tocantins - ALiTTETO (SILVA, 2018), este artigo investiga a possível ‘gênese’ do termo boroca , que, de acordo com a definição de informantes tocantinenses, é a mesma coisa que bolsa , mala . A pesquisa parte da busca lexicográfica, com intuito de verificar esse possível ‘nascimento’, investigando as ocorrências e a frequência do termo em jornais e periódicos disponíveis no arquivo digital da hemeroteca da Biblioteca Nacional, até chegarmos aos relatos dos informantes que ligam o curioso termo ao universo do garimpo. A partir dos estudos lexicográficos e dialetológicos é que se pode verificar o comportamento da boroca através do tempo: inicialmente entendida como nome próprio, após como sobrenome, nome de animal e, na década de 1980 como designativo para um tipo de bolsa de couro, nomeação possivelmente atribuída na “efervescência linguística” do garimpo de Serra Pelada, no sudeste do Pará.
其他摘要：Based on a concern arisen during the interviews which resulted in the Atlas Linguístico Topodinâmico e Topoestático do Tocantins – ALiTTETO (SILVA, 2018), this paper investigates the ‘genesis’ of boroca, which means bag or suitcase, according to the definition given by the informants from the Brazilian state of Tocantins. The research, based on a lexicographic study, aims at verifying the origin of such word by investigating its occurrence and frequency in newspapers and magazines available at the digital archives of the National Library of Brazil, which led us to the informants’ accounts linking the curious word to the realm of mining. Based on lexicographical and dialectological studies, it is possible to observe boroca throughout time: initially, it was used as a proper name; afterwards, as a surname and as the name of an animal; in the 1980s, to designate a type of leather bag, most likely due to the “linguistic effervescence” that took place in the mining site of Serra Pelada, in the southeast of the Brazilian state of Pará.
