摘要:Drawing on data from the international representative surveys European Value Studies 1991, 1999, 2008 and selected Eurobarometer surveys, the article presents attitudes and opinions of citizens of Slovakia towards the environment, environmental problems and their solutions, and the issue of responsibility for the protection of nature. It shows that respondents associate the notion of environment mostly with protecting nature and green and pleasant landscapes. Considerably fewer respondents from Slovakia than average Europeans associate the environment with climate change and pollution in towns. However, these phenomena together with natural disasters represent environmental issues of the greatest concern in Slovakia. Citizens of Slovakia, as other Europeans, seem to strongly support the idea of sustainable development. Respondents in Slovakia tend to see environmental protection as a joint responsibility of industrial polluters and individuals, and think that the government should allocate more money to the protection of environment. The majority of respondents also believe that they can play a role in protecting the environment. The data shows, however, that they do not participate as members or volunteers in environmental protection organisations. On the other hand, environmental protection organisations are the most trustworthy sources of information concerning environment in Slovakia.
