摘要:The article exposes historical roots of many contemporary traffic problems. After historical excursion to the system of European landscape of patches, patterns and mosaics influenced by roads authors give several interesting examples of historical development of roads and settlements in the Šumava Mts. and in the Vltava river basin. The roads have represented the main source of welfare; they have determined development or decay of many towns and other social structures. There appears a paradox today: it is the first time when a road does not pose only connection, but also separation. It means the separation of landscape, regional and social separation. In contemporary system of values the road, motorway, highway still represents some symbol of economic and social success. This symbol is supported also by the Czech industry that produces every year more than 460 thousand of passenger cars. This requires new and better roads, car services, parking places, etc. Turn point lies in our mediaeval thinking about roads being the main source of wealth, despite of fact, that the wealth can represent also patches into mosaic itself.
