This study takes Han and minority college students as research objects and selects four identity reference groups (country, nationality, gender and occupation) to explore the influence of the importance of social identity within an individual on the group-reference effect (GRE). The results showed that there is no difference in GRE among college students of different nationalities; the more important the social identity, the larger the corresponding group reference effect. Our findings suggested that in the individual’s self, the different social identities are arranged in order of importance. The more important the social identity is, the closer it is to the core of individual self-concept, and this importance influences the cognitive processing of collective self-related information.
