摘要：The relevance of music in Wittgenstein’s life and thought is well-known. Particularly, the writings on this theme concern the relationship between music and culture and the possibility of the aesthetic judgment. Following a suggestion by Cavell, I am shifting the attention on the value of Wittgenstein’s reflections on music for his philosophy of language. In the first paragraph, I underline the presence of music in Wittgenstein’s training and the impression of Schopenhauer’s thought on him. Then I take into consideration the propositions 3.141, 4.014 and 4.0141 of the Tractatus, in order to show how music is used to explain the “picture theory” of the language. Also in the “meaning as use theory” of understanding presented in Philosophical Investigations, the parallelism between music and language is preserved, and this implies to consider Wittgenstein’s critique towards modern musicians a sort of impossibility of understanding. I conclude that in Wittgenstein’s conception, language and music are linked by performativity, but that they are independent from each other, otherwise it would not be possible to appreciate music as a phenomenon able to affect different theories about language.
