摘要:Tulving (1972) defined episodic memory as memory for what, where, and when. Clayton and Dickinson’s (1998) behavioralmodelforanimals wasadapted to examine what, where, and whenmemory in humans. Participants viewed unique visualscenes offurnished homes in both blocked and mixed designs. Theyweretested separately for memory of objects (What), spatialconfigurations (Where),and temporal order ofthescenes (When),and participants’accuracy and reaction times wereexamined foreach condition. Performance was highestand reaction time was fastest for the Whatcondition. Participants werealso fasterand moreaccuratein the mixed design experimentcompared to the blocked design experiment. This study established a behavioralanalysis ofepisodic memory in humans based uponClayton and Dickinson’s (1998)animalmodel, whichwill providea basis for functionalepisodic memory studies to separately characterizethecorticalmechanisms for processing episodic memory using the object, spatial, and temporaltask with humans.
