  • 摘要:The purpose of this paper is to evaluate The Collection of Tetsu Hijikata’s Haiku:For a Good Day,which depicts the treatment of tuberculosis in haiku of the 1950s. It is an important work which can help us to reconsider the contemporary framework of medical and social haiku. First,we will assess the representation of tuberculosis in modern Japanese literature and compare the medical haiku of the 1950s with Hijikata’s haiku. In the study of the representation of tuberculosis in modern Japanese literature, the haiku genre has rarely been addressed. In addition, research on medical haiku has tended to attract attention only to Hakyo Ishida’s haiku. For that reason,I will focus on the Tetsu Hijikata’s haiku, which were influenced by Hakyo Ishida’s work. Most of the medical haiku of that time express the fear, suffering, and sorrow associated with the treatment of tuberculosis, and the increasing stereotypicality of such work was reinforced by the social haiku which appeared in the haiku field at that time. In such a situation,Hijikata referenced the Asia-Pacific War and the Korean War by using the word “roar” in conjunction with the treatment of tuberculosis. On this basis,The Collection of Tetsu Hijikata’s Haiku:For a Good Day can be evaluated as a text that captures the contemporary framework of medical and social haiku, and that develops a new framework for the genre.
