Distress

Distress. What does this word bring to mind? A damsel trapped in a tower? Well, yes, but it is also a band composed of four talented teenagers.

Casey Miller, 16, plays bass, the Wills brothers (yes, they are twins), Eric, 16, plays quitar, Dan, 16, plays drums, and Bill Hemple, 18, is the lead singer in the group.

Distress formed about three years ago when Miller and another guitarist hooked up with the Wills brothers and Bill, who were previously in an alternative band. A year later the other guitarist quit, and since then they have grown together as a group.

They consider their music heavy metal, inspired by bands like Fear Factory, Pantera, Slip Knot, Korn, and Coal Chamber.

All four members basically want the same thing: to record albums, get out of Spokane and go all the way to the top.

Distress practices every Saturday at the Wills brothers' house. They have played at a number of private parties - and sometimes get paid.

But money doesn't seem to mean a lot to them right now. They are mostly interested in spreading the word around town about their music.

Distress went through a difficult time when Miller was in boot camp for seven months. Instead of replacing him, the rest of the members left his spot open for his return, showing both unity and determination.

So what's the best thing about being in a band?

Miller said it best: "It's when we can all get together and do something that we love that also shows our emotions."

Better enjoy them now - while they are still here.
