BALANCED BENGALS BEAT LAKE CITY
Mike Green CorrespondentThe Lewiston Bengals keep adding notches to their list of assets. The Bengals are known for being physical and having a tough defense. With their most recent win, add one more: a potent, balanced offense.
Lewiston used all those to run over the Lake City Timberwolves 39- 21 Friday night in Idaho A-1 non-league football game at Bengal Field.
With a 42-0 win over Clarkston last week, the Bengals (4-2) have scored 81 points in tehir last two games. Lewiston did it Friday with the passing of Neil Litchfield and the running of Dave Steen. Litchfield, a sophomore, connected on 11 of 15 passes for 162 yards and three touchdowns. Steen carried 23 times for 98 yards and touchdowns of 5, 1 and 1 yards. The Timberwolves (4-2) utilized two big plays for scores in the first half for an 18-15 intermission lead and scored once more at the buzzer to end the game. The Bengals jumped out to a quick 6-0 score when Mike Rogers returned the opening kickoff 90 yards for the score. The extra point kick was blocked. But the Timberwolves came right back, and on their third play, quarterback Chad Troxel threaded through the left side of the line and galloped 76 yards down the left sideline. Sam Stroh's extra point kick gave Lake City a 7-6 lead with less than a minute gone in the game. The Bengals then drove to Lake City's 13 only to fumble away the ball, but Lewiston recovered a Timberwolves' fumble three plays later, which set up the Bengals' second score on a 22-yard pass from Litchfield to Josh Wolf. After a failed pass extra point pass, it was 12-7. The Bengals scored again on a 10-play, 64-yard drive capped by Steen's first TD with 9:30 left in the half, but Lake City answered on a weird touchdown play. Lewiston's Derek Bruce intercepted a Troxel pass on his own 16, but fumbled on the runback, and Lake City's Justin Nipp took the ball in from 30 yards out, which made it 18-15 after the 2-point conversion. "Someone hit him, and the ball popped out, and I just caught it," Nipp said. At the buzzer, Troxel tossed a 22-yard pass to Chad Bramlet for Lake City's final score. "They outplayed us," said Lake City coach Van Troxel. "They played more physical than us and were more consistent. "It's a non-conference game. We just have to regroup and stay focused as a team."
