Portland mayor hires staff for Community Visioning Project
DJC StaffMayor Tom Potter has hired Liesl Wendt as the project manager for his Community Vision Project, which will begin engaging the community in early November.
Wendt is an Oregon native who has spent the last 14 years working with a variety of nonprofit organizations in the Portland metro area, including Oregon Food Bank, for which she did public policy work, United Way of the Columbia Willamette and the regional 211 information and referral program.
Potter also named Juan Carlos Ocana the vision committee coordinator. Originally from Ecuador, Ocana has lived in Portland for the last nine years. His professional experience includes working for social service and housing organizations in the Portland metro area.
Ocana has also been an active volunteer in social justice organizations at the city, state and national levels.
Liesl and Juan Carlos bring dedication to our community and a real commitment to reaching out to as many diverse groups in our city as possible, said Mayor Potter in making the appointments.
The Community Vision Project was initiated by the mayor to engage Portlanders in a discussion about the future of their city. Potter intends to craft a 30-year vision that will serve as a roadmap guiding future decisions about the direction of the city. A five- year strategic plan will offer a short-term action plan for the city of Portland.
Wendt said the project is entering its second and more public phase. She and Ocaea are in the process of selecting a vision committee, which will be made up of at least 30 Portland-area residents.
Background information about the city is being compiled by the Bureau of Planning, which also recruited vision committee applicants this summer, she said. Outreach - real grassroots outreach - will hit the streets in the new year. Then Portlanders will have their chance to influence what the community wants to become.
