Southern, Southwestern Oregon projects win AIA awards

Alison Ryan

AIA/Southwestern Oregon and AIA/Southern Oregon honored six area projects with seven awards as part of its annual juried design competition.

WBGS Architecture and Planning of Eugene took home three of the seven awards. The firm's Lane Transit District Springfield Station won a merit award for overall design as well as an innovation award for sustainable elements within the project, and the firm's Eugene Depot took a citation award for meshing historical significance with modern elements.

Skelton Straus Seibert Architects of Medford also took a citation award for its design of the White City Library.

Rowell Brokaw Architects of Eugene took two awards, a merit award for One East Broadway in downtown Eugene and an honor award for the Central Lutheran Church Columbarium and Memorial Courtyard in Eugene.

Area Architects, a Eugene firm, was honored with a merit award for a residential project at 2750 Lawrence St. in Eugene.

A People's Choice element, held in early October at the Eugene Celebration, honored 10 projects in five categories: residential, commercial, public/institutional, residential landscape and commercial/public landscape.

In the commercial category, Chuck Bailey Architect's McCracken Building took first place, and Rowell Brokaw's One East Broadway took second.

James Givens Design took the lone award in the residential category for its design of a contemporary home built in an oak grove.

WBGS took top honors in the public/institutional category, with its Springfield Station taking first and Eugene Depot taking second. Robertson/Sherwood Architects PC took third for the Hermiston Family Aquatic Center.

In the landscape architecture categories, the residential first- place award went to Stangeland & Associates, and the second-place award went to Kate McGee Landscape Architecture. Both honors in the commercial/public landscape architecture category went to Cameron McCarthy Gilbert & Scheibe Landscape Architects, which took first place for Springfield Station and second place for Powell Plaza at Hayward Field.
