CHIEF QUITS OVER ARTS COUNCIL ROW
JAMES KELLYTHE Director of the Arts Council of Ireland has resigned in protest after the council decided to dump its five-year strategy for the arts.
Patricia Quinn handed in her letter of resignation on Friday after the council decided to scrap the blueprint which it had drawn up with Government in 2002.
In her letter of resignation Ms Quinn said that "in circumstances where the Council's precipitate action overturns Government policy and is contrary to the considered advice of its own executive, I am in honour obliged to give notice of my decision to resign my position as director".
The Arts Council decided to "set aside" the Arts Plan 2002-2006 as soon as it completed an examination of its aims and priorities.
The existing plan had been criticised by members of the council and some within the arts community.
