HOW tragic it was to read last week's report of how the legacy of the 1984 miners' strike has brought desperate heroin addiction to our former pit communities.

It was inevitable that after Thatcher's butchery 20 years ago generations of hardship and social unrest would follow but surely nobody could have forecast this sad catalogue of addiction that has become so rife in these areas.

With the addicts' needs so great to fuel their fixes, it's hardly surprising that shoplifting is common. It could so easily take another 20 years to get these areas "clean" again.
