American chronicles

Alexander, Gary L

125 YEARS AGO, NOV. 19, 1873,

William Marcy (Boss) Tweed, the symbol of New York City's corrupt government, was convicted of 204 charges of fraud, incurred during his one-man reign from 1865 to 1871. He was fined $12,550 and sentenced to 12 years in jail, but he was released in January 1875.

100 YEARS AGO, NOV. 8, 1898, the Republicans gained a 2-to-1 majority (5326) in the Senate, and a smaller (185-163) majority in the House. In a more important race, Theodore Roosevelt was elected Republican governor of New York, partly due to his recent Spanish-American War record, but also to clean up the corruption that still lingered over New York politics.

NOV 8, 1938-in

sharp contrast to 1898-the Democrats "slipped" from a 76-16 majority in the Senate, to "just" a 69-23 majority. The Democratic majority in the House slipped from 331-89 to 261-164.

50 YEARS AGO, NOV. 2, 1948, Truman defeated Dewey, despite a headline in the Chicago Tribune that guessed wrong: "Dewey Defeats Truman." In truth, Dewey defeated Dewey, by remaining silent and complacent, while Truman barnstormed the country.

40 YEARS AGO, NOV. 4, 1958, the

Democrats made another congressional sweep, gaining 13 Senate seats (to 62-34) and 47 House seats (to 282-153). In state elections, Democrats gained five state houses to reach a 34-14 plurality.

30 YEARS AGO, NOV 5,1968, Richard

Nixon was elected President, beating Hubert Humphrey handily in electoral votes, 302-191, to 46 for George Wallace.

In popular votes, however, it was narrower, with Nixon (43.42%) beating Humphrey (42.72%) by only 500,000 votes, followed by Wallace (13.53%).

NOV. 17, 1973, one year after his secondterm landslide, President Nixon uttered one of the more memorable phrases of his Watergate crisis, in a nationally televised speech: "I am not a crook." Then, the famous 18 1/2-minute gap in a key Watergate tape was revealed four days later, Nov. 21, 1973. On the "energy crisis" front, on November 7, Nixon called for energy conservation measures, including a "temporary" national speed limit of 55-mph, an extension of Daylight Savings Time, less heating oil and jet fuel allocations, and, on November 25, Nixon also asked for a ban on Sunday gasoline sales.
