AMERICAN CHRONICLES

Alexander, Gary

225 years ago, on Nov. 2,1779, the University of Pennsylvania became the first legally recognized state university in America. On November 30, the Continental Congress issued the final batch of Continental currency-over $240 million in four years. At the start of 1779, a dollar in coins was the equivalent of eight paper dollars. But by November, the rate was 38.5 paper dollars per metallic dollar.

100 years ago, on Nov. 8, 1904, President Theodore Roosevelt was re-elected. On November 15, King Camp Gillette patented the first razor with disposable blades. The third Olympic Games were held that month, in St. Louis, Mo. (the first Olympics in the U.S.), closing on November 23.

75 years ago, throughout the week of Nov. 4-8, 1929, the stock market kept falling. The Dow Jones index fell another 37 points (13.5%). In fact, the market closed on November 5, in fear of a repeat of Black Tuesday (Oct. 24, 1929). But the next day, the Dow fell 10%. Perhaps prematurely, Leo Reisman's orchestra recorded "Happy Days are Here Again" for Victor Records on November 20. On November 28, Adm. Richard E. Byrd made his first flight over the South Pole. American celebrities born 75 years ago this month include: Princess Grace Kelly (November 12), actor and left-wing activist Ed Asner (November 15), and the ageless one, Dick Clark (November 30).

50 years ago, on Nov. 10, 1954, the Iwo Jima (Marine) Memorial was dedicated, in Arlington, Virginia. The next day, President Eisenhower signed a bill changing the name of Armistice Day to Veteran's Day. On November 19, Sammy Davis, Jr. was seriously injured in a car accident in San Bernardino, Calif., in which he lost his left eye.

25 years ago, on Nov. 3, 1979, 63 Americans were taken hostage at the U.S. Embassy in Teheran, Iran. A few were released the next day, but 54 American hostages were held for the next 444 days. On November 8, ABC's midnight broadcast, "Iran Crisis: America Held Hostage," became "Nightline," and Ted Koppel became that show's anchor by the end of the month.

10 years ago, on Nov. 8,1994, the "Republican Revolution" brought the GOP into a majority position in both houses of Congress for the first time in 40 years. The stock market liked this news. That's when the market began taking off on its five-year rise from Dow 3600 to 11,723.
