Spoils of War

   When people ask what it
   was like growing up

   during the war I tell them
   about the souvenir

   He gave me--blood-red flag
   with white circle &

   black swastika in the centre--&
   how I Haunted it

   before my friends, claimed
   he'd killed a hundred

   Krauts to win it--the dead
   mounting with each retelling

   until the afternoon he caught
   me bragging in his name.
