SHAWNEE COUNTY

Sheriff Dick Barta

The Capital-Journal

The Shawnee County Sheriff's Department wants to get more computer literate.

Sheriff Dick Barta wants to send Lt. Gaylon Thompson to a forensic computer investigations seminar in Cape Girardeau, Mo., to become versed in the art of investigating crimes in which a computer was used to commit the offense or where a computer might contain evidence that would lead to a suspect, such as in a child pornography case.

Barta will ask county commissioners during their Thursday meeting to authorize out-of-state travel for Thompson.

The seminar is scheduled for Monday through Sept. 1, and Thompson's participation would be paid for by a federal grant, with the exception of lodging and meals, which Barta estimates at $524.

Barta noted in a memorandum to commissioners that there are no forensic computer investigations seminars scheduled for this year closer to Shawnee County than Cape Girardeau.

Commissioners will meet at 9 a.m. Thursday in room B-11 at the Shawnee County Courthouse, 200 S.E. 7th. The agenda includes:
