New standards of openness and compassion needed
Paul CampeauI was thoroughly impressed and impassioned by the open letter to the Roman Catholic Church regarding gays and lesbians, in your Jan. 25 issue. I wholeheartedly agree with the writers of this fine, nuanced article. I would like to make the powers-that-be more conscious of the world that we live in. Certain attitudes are no longer acceptable in the third millennium. We should have, as disciples of Christ by now, grown beyond the categories of the past. If Christ did anything, it was to constantly challenge the status quo and the limited confines of religious thought in the world of his time in favor of love and the Kingdom.
Are we not called to do the same and should those who lead not set some standard of openness, compassion and understanding?
Thank you for a fine newspaper. Thank God for all those who help to stimulate our thoughts beyond the letter of canon law.
