Coverage of Cachia
Joan M. LeeThank you for your clear, excellent coverage of the regression of the institutional church. ("Fr. Ed Cachia and the reign of terror"; CNZ, Oct. 9)
As believing and thinking Catholics, we are now forced to engage in a war not of our choosing or design, but in response to a church hierarchy that is attacking the very fiber of our beliefs, labeling the faithful as unworthy and reverting to a patriarchal demand for blind obedience.
Such treatment is not only disrespectful, it is an abuse of power and it abandons the mandate of service to the people of God who are the church.
Many Catholics have demonstrated their opposition by quietly withdrawing from the practice of their faith.
Others maintain faithful attendance at Mass and the sacraments in the hope that the destructive forces will eventually dissipate.
Ed Cachia is a priest of exceptional courage, faith and insight. It is time for the people of God to fred their own courage and stand up to be counted.
This is a fight for church, not against it.
