The check is no longer in the mail for Shawnee County residents waiting for money back on license plates they turn in to the county.
Starting July 10, cash will be paid on the spot for license plates from sold or disposed of vehicles.
County Treasurer Rita Cline said the same would apply to tax refunds for those who trade down to a cheaper vehicle. Since vehicle taxes were paid in advance, the owner would get a pro-rated amount of money back.
Residents have been waiting seven to 10 days to receive their checks in the mail, Cline said. After a person turns in a license plate, their information is entered into a database and sent to the Audit/Finance Department where the check is issued, sent to the processing department and mailed to the plate holder. The county completes 30 to 40 refunds a day.
Under the new system, vehicle owners will hand-carry old plates to the treasurer's office for a refund.
Cline said the new system will save the county $1,800 a month in postage, man hours and check costs, and it won't prevent the county from keeping clear records on the plate transactions.
"We will still have a definite, clear-cut check-and-balance system," Cline said.
