THEY say a week is a long time in politics. Tony Blair has scraped through his most difficult week as a winner - but at a cost. His unpopular plan for higher university fees was passed by an extremely narrow majority. At the same time Blair was cleared of lying about his role in the David Kelly affair.

The best education must not go to the highest bidder. Good education for all has been a cornerstone of Labour policy since the foundation of the party.

Blair is fortunate - but luck has a habit of running out.
