Rural girls turn back Manhattan

Manhattan's girls hadn't played a game in 10 days, and it showed in the first quarter of Tuesday night's 56-42 loss at Washburn Rural.

From the opening tipoff, Rural looked to be on its way to a rout after taking a 15-6 lead at the end of the first quarter.

But midway through the second quarter, the Indians made a game of it, contesting every shot and going to the floor for every loose ball. A free throw just before intermission by Ineke Ingram brought Manhattan to within one at halftime, 24-23.

The lead changed hands numerous times before Rural took control of the game on a 3-point shot by Jeneka Joyce that put the Junior Blues up 31-30 with 3:40 left in the third quarter. Joyce and Courtney Hodges added 3-pointers during a 13-2 run that opened a 41-32 lead at the end of three periods.

Joyce, playing her first game since injuring her ankle in the Capital Classic championship game last Wednesday, scored 26 points. Ingram led Manhattan with 17 points.

"We played awfully well in the first quarter, and I think our girls became relaxed and Manhattan decided they were going to get after us," Rural coach Bill Annan said. "We struggled through the second quarter and didn't execute very well. But Manhattan has some very good players and they're always prepared; they're smart kids that understand what they need to do."

Wamego 75, Highland Park 54

Wamego used a 15-0 spurt to start the third quarter and blow open what had been a tight, 33-29 game.

The winless Scots, which made only nine turnovers in the first half, made five turnovers on seven possessions during the game- deciding scoreless drought that saw Wamego open a 48-29 lead. The Scots never got closer than 13 the rest of the way, even as they easily played one of their best games.

Suzanne Rogers, a 5-foot-11 senior, led the Raiders with 20 points on 7-of-9 shooting. Megan McAfee added 16, Lindsay Adams 13 and Cara McPeak 11.

Highland Park was led by reserve guard Lacy Michael, who had a career-high 25 points on 10-of-23 shooting from the field. Jazmin Austin added 13.

Shawnee Heights 45,

Olathe East 44

Sarah Meissner got a last-second steal and converted a buzzer- beating layup for the game-winning points as Shawnee Heights upset Olathe East, the second-ranked team in Class 6A, Monday night in the Heights gym.

Trailing by a point and playing for one shot in the final seconds, Heights missed its chance at the game-winner and East rebounded the miss. But Meissner immediately stole back the ball under the T- Birds' basket and hit the layup that handed East only its second loss.

Heights had rallied from a 10-point halftime deficit. Maggie Diehl scored six of her 10 points in the third quarter to start the comeback. Meissner had a big fourth quarter, getting a 3-pointer and the game-winning basket.

Dani McHenry paced Heights with 15 points.
