MANHATTAN --- Kansas State University's Golden Key National Honor Society recently held its annual membership induction. During the induction ceremony, two K-State students received Golden Key scholarships and five honorary members were inducted.
Bree Ann Hedman, Manhattan junior in mechanical engineering, was Golden Key's junior scholarship recipient. Melissa Suzanne Glaser, Emporia senior in elementary education, was Golden Key's senior scholarship recipient.
The scholarship is determined by grade point average, extra curricular activities and leadership experience, said Meleah Gearon, Overland Park senior in mass communications and Golden Key president.
"All new Golden Key inductees are eligible for the scholarship," said Gearon. "The students with the highest grade point averages are selected and then the recipient is chosen based on their level of campus involvement."
The scholarship is determined by the number of new Golden Key inductees.
This year, each scholarship winner received more than $600, Gearon said.
Among the juniors and seniors, five honorary members were inducted into Golden Key. The honorary members were nominated by Golden Key members and were chosen based on their contributions to the campus and organizations they work with.
"Golden Key members nominate faculty and community members who make a difference in the lives of those around them," said Gearon.
Ata Karim, university psychologist, is among the faculty and staff selected for honorary membership. Karim took over the role as Golden Key's adviser at the induction ceremony. Others selected for honorary membership include Scott Jones, assistant dean of student life; Jeffrey Pickering, assistant professor of political science; Bryan Schurle, professor of agriculture economics; and William Turnley, assistant professor of management.
Golden Key is a student-run organization devoted to academic achievement, community service and social interaction.
