Memorial Services for David P. Rall, NIEHS Director and Founding Director of NTP, To Be Held at NIH, Bethesda, MD, and at NIEHS, Research Triangle Park, N.C.

David P. Rall, M.D., Ph.D., pioneering environmental health scientist and former director (1971-90) of the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences, and founding director of the National Toxicology Program, will be remembered at memorial programs Dec. 3, from 3 to 5 p.m. at the Natcher Center on the campus of the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Md., and Dec. 6 from 9:30 a.m. to noon at the Rodbell Conference Center on the South (Main) Campus of the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences, 111 T. W. Alexander drive in Research Triangle Park, N.C.

Dr. Rall, 73, died Sept. 28 after an automobile accident near Bordeaux, France. Speakers from the worlds of science and public service will offer their remembrances of Dr. Rall and appreciation for his role in developing the environmental health sciences as a focal point of public health. The memorial programs are open to family, friends and colleagues of Dr. Rall, and to media and the public.

Speakers at the Dec. 3 event at NIH will include: Bernard Weinstein, Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center; Ruth Kirschstein, deputy director NIH; Donald Frederickson, former director NIH; David Obey, U.S. Congressman from Wisconsin; Kenneth Shine, president of the Institute of Medicine; David Hoel, University of South Carolina School of Medicine; Emil Frei, Harvard Medical School; Kenneth Olden, NIEHS and NTP director; Joseph Califano, former Secretary, the Department of Health and Human Services; Constance Pechura, Robert Wood Johnson Foundation; Don Ryan, director of Alliance to End Childhood Lead Poisoning; and Ellen Silbergeld, University of Maryland. Signs point the way to Natcher from the Medical Centers stop on the Metro.

Speakers at the Dec. 6 event at NIEHS will include: Kenneth Olden, NIEHS director; Watts Hill Jr., a Rall family friend whose father was active in the development of Research Triangle Park; Tim Valentine, former Congressman from N.C.; David Price, U.S Congressman from North Carolina; John McLachlan, Tulane University and former NIEHS scientific director; J. Carl Barrett, NIEHS scientific director; George Lucier, director of the NIEHS Environmental Toxicology Program; Bernard Goldstein, Rutgers and the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey; Philip Landrigan, Mount Sinai School of Medicine; Terri Damstra, World Health Organization; Cesare Maltoni, secretary general, Collegium Ramazzini, Bologna, Italy; and Joseph Edward Rall, David Rall's brother and former deputy director for intramural research at NIH. There is limited visitor parking adjacent to the main headquarters entrance and additional parking a short walk away in the employees' parking area.
