Topeka businesswoman and former teacher Lana Gordon filed Monday for the Republican nomination in the 52nd District of the Kansas House of Representatives.

"As a teacher working with kids, a parent with school children and a volunteer in the district, I strongly believe in the importance of educating our youth to be ready for the next century," said Gordon, 49, who filed the necessary papers with the secretary of state's office to be a candidate in the 2000 elections. "These experiences make me familiar with our educational system. I see a definite need for our schools to continue to search for ways they can better prepare our children to become productive citizens."

The 52nd District of southwest Topeka is represented by Lynn Jenkins, who is in her first term. Earlier this month, Jenkins, 36, filed for the Republican nomination to the 20th District of the state Senate. Sen. Alicia Salisbury, a Republican who represents the 20th District of southwest Topeka, announced this month she won't seek re- election.

Gordon has lived in Topeka for 26 years. She is a 1971 graduate of the University of Kansas and was a substitute teacher in the Kansas City area and later worked as a third-grade teacher in the Lee's Summit, Mo., public schools. In Topeka, she served as director of the Temple Beth Sholom Preschool.

Gordon, who said she is becoming more familiar with legislative issues, said she would strive to reduce government, create jobs, provide better education, get tough on crime and cut taxes.

"Our economy is rapidly changing to one based on service and technology," said Gordon, who along with her husband, Arnold, owns and operates Cardinal Building Services Inc., of Topeka.

"Our priorities and policies must reflect these changes," she said. "We have to live within our means by sticking to these priorities --- not by raising taxes."

Gordon served as chairwoman of the Young Women's Advocacy Project from 1995 to 1997; is a 1994 graduate of the Leadership Greater Topeka program; has served as a member and officer of the Volunteer Center of Topeka board of directors; and is a member of the Junior League of Topeka board of directors.
