TECH STOCKS RISE -- A rally by semiconductor stocks bolstered the tech sector Feb. 16 after strong earnings reports from Applied Materials and Analog Devices lifted spirits. The Nasdaq Composite picked up 27 points to 4,448, while the DJIA rose 14 points to 10,732.

A booming communications market helped Analog Devices beat expectations for the Q1 by 5 cents a share. Portal Lycos Inc. rose 5.38 to 74.25, lifted by news of better-than-expected earnings for fiscal Q2 and a 120% jump in sales. Lycos helped the Goldman Sachs Internet Index and the Amex Internet Index post fractional gains.

Viacom Inc. checked in with a Q4 profit from operations of 19 cents a share, 5 cents ahead of the First Call estimates.

Other stocks that posted gains last week included AT&T Corp., 3.26%, Nortel Networks, .31% and 3Com Corp., 6.79%.
