Gavonna Murphy
ron E. Murphy on June 24, 1951. He survives.Gavonna J. Murphy, 68, Topeka, died Tuesday, Sept. 7, 1999, at a Topeka hospital.
Mrs. Murphy was a professional cake decorator, and a member and treasurer of the Cake Arts Club. She also sold Tupperware from 1966 until she retired in 1998. She and her husband also had been active in real estate and farming in Riley, Wabaunsee and Shawnee counties.
She was born Dec. 23, 1930, in Emporia, the daughter of Ted and Ethel Hembling Newcomer. She was raised in Emporia, and she earned a bachelor's degree in education from Kansas State Teachers College in 1953. She had lived in Topeka since 1955.
Mrs. Murphy was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church where she sang in the choir and was active in worship and music, and the hymn selection committees. She also was past president of Tri-S, WELCA and she was president of the Congregational Council from 1995 to 1997. She was a 25-year member of the Topeka Chapter of Daughters of the American Revolution where she served as treasurer, social secretary, chaplain, social chairman and vice-regent.

Other survivors include a son, B.T. "Ted" Murphy, Emporia; a daughter, Andrea M. "Shelley" Andrews, Topeka; and three grandchildren.
Memorial services will be at 1 p.m. Sunday at Trinity Lutheran Church. Graveside inurnment services in Wabaunsee County will be private.
