Football: Gr-eight win

JAMES ROBINSON

MARK WARREN'S effort two minutes into injury time sealed an amazing victory for ill- disciplined eight-man Southend.

Swansea manager Brian Flynn was left seething after seeing his side fail to outgun the visitors, who had David McSweeney dismissed for a professional foul after 23 minutes, Jay Smith ordered off for a second bookable offence five minutes from time and goal hero Mark Gower joining him in the dressing room two minutes later.

"We have to take it on the chin," said Flynn. "But that wasn't good enough and we know the players can do better both individually and collectively.

"To say we were poor was an understatement and we didn't defend well as a team after they had a player sent off.

"We made schoolboy errors at crucial times and we got punished for that. The old saying is you only get what you deserve and we didn't deserve to win that."

James Thomas gave the Swans a flying start after 14 minutes with a header, but it was a mere three minutes before Leon Constantine fired home to equalise.

Gower then struck right on half time to give Southend the lead.

Warren sealed the points for the visitors deep into injury time, but there was still time for Thomas to strike again for the Swans with a volley - but it was too little, too late as Southend clinched the most unikely of victories.

Swansea now face a tricky test at Dave Penney's Doncaster and Flynn insisted he will only know how badly his promotion hopefuls' confidence has been affected when they face them next week.

"We'll have to start again on Monday," he said.

"We had serious lows last year and we had to pick ourselves up from that so well know how to go about it."
