GAA stand told it's finally over the Hill
JOHN MANNINGGAA fans finally said goodbye to 'the Hill' when bulldozers moved in to demolish the famous Croke Park stand.
Hill 16 has been home to generations of Dublin supporters, many of whom will have shed a tear yesterday as the historic standing-room- only terrace gave way to progress.
The demolition marks the start of the final phase of development at Croke Park and will take the stadium's capacity way beyond 70,000.
If 'The Kop' is the spiritual home then the Hill became the same for Dublin's GAA-mad followers.
Hiill 16 gained its famous name when the stand was constructed from the rubble created from the destruction in O'Connell Street after the 1916 rising.
Dublin fans had even launched an Internet campaign to save the Hill but yesterday that fight ended and the hill is no more.
When the ambitious Croke Park project is finished, almost 80,000 fans can sit in relative comfort to watch their games.
