Supplement to a checklist of English translations of M.M. Bakhtin and His Circle

David Gorman

When I prepared the original checklist, "Bakhtin and His Circle," which appeared in the previous bibliographical issue of Style (27.4, Winter 1993: 515-20), I neglected to consult The Bakhtin Newsletter (also titled Le Bulletine Bakhtine), an invaluable publication issued irregularly from the French Department of Queen's University (Kingston, Ontario), where its general editor, Clive Thomson, has taught (interested readers should note that Professor Thomson has recently moved to the University of Western Ontario, Department of French, in London, Ontario). Number 1 of the Newsletter appeared in 1983, 2 in 1986, 3 in 1991, and 4 in 1993 - and I understand that a new number is in preparation.

Reviewing the information provided in these publications, I find that three entries in the checklist should be revised - two from Part 2 (listing writings published under Bakhtin's name in approximate chronological order of composition) and one from Part 3 (listing works published under the names of P. N. Medvedev and V. N. Voloshinov, also chronologically).

Thus, in Part 2, revise the second entry for 1940 (p. 518) to read - in full - as follows:

1940. "The Art of the Word and the Culture of Folk Humor (Rabelais and Gogol')." Omitted ch. of 1940 dissertation. Rev. 1970; pub. 1973. 1975: 484-95. Trans. William Mandel. Studies in Soviet Literature 12 (1976): 27-39. Rpt. Semiotics and Structuralism. Ed. Henryk Baran. White Plains, NY: International Arts and Sciences Press, 1976. 284-96. Trans. Patricia Sollner: "Rabelais and Gogol: The Art of Discourse and the Popular Culture of Laughter." Mississippi Review 33 (1983): 34-50.

Further in Part 2, add to the entry for 1965 (p. 519):

Extract (of ch. 1: 88-94): "Laughter and Freedom." Marxism and Art: Essays Classic and Contemporary. Ed. Maynard Solomon. New York: Knopf, 1973. 295-300. (Editor's intro., 292-95.)

Finally, in Part 3 (under Voloshinov, p. 520), add to the entry for Freudianism:

Freudianism: A Critical Sketch. Trans. Ki-Han Song. Seoul, Yemun, 1989 (authors: "M. M. Bakhtin/V. N. Voloshinov").

Since the checklist was published, I have also seen one new translation into English of work by Bakhtin or - possibly - a member of his circle. The work in question was published under the name of Bakhtin's friend, the biologist Ivan Ivanovich Kanaev (1893-?), but was apparently written by Bakhtin; rather than attempting to enter into the question of authorship here, however, I have kept to the policy observed in the original bibliography and set out the information in this supplemental entry solely on the basis of that provided by my source. Therefore add, in Part 2, a new entry for 1926 (p. 517):

1926. [Published under I. Kanaev's name] "Contemporary Vitalism." Trans. Charles Byrd. The Crisis in Modernism: Bergson and the Vitalist Controversy. Ed. Frederick Burwick and Paul Douglass. Cambridge: Cambridge UP, 1992. 76-97.

I expect, in further supplements, to enlarge and correct the checklist as necessary; comments and contributions from interested readers will of course be most welcome.
