MOTORCYCLING: ARCHIE THE TT STAR
JOHN BROWNADRIAN ARCHIBALD won an emotional and clear-cut first TT in the Formula One race on the Isle of Man yesterday.
An early-race challenge from Cumbrian John Guinness ended when his MonsterMob Ducati had gearbox trouble.
And Ulsterman Archibald dedicated his victory to his former team- mate, David Jefferies, who was killed when he crashed during practice last Thursday.
"I really wanted to win this race for David as he was more than a great rider, he was a real friend," he said. "I want to dedicate this win to David's parents who were right behind me in this race."
McGuinness's gear problem forced him into the pits but he still retained third place, behind Honda rider Ian Lougher.
Richard Quayle was taken to hospital after crashing at Balla Spur, near Ballacraine, on the second lap.
