LOCAL STUDENTS RECEIVE SCHOLARSHIPS AT EWU, PLU

Three Spokane students recently received scholarships for this academic year two attending Eastern Washington University and another at Pacific Lutheran University in Tacoma:

Ginette Blackhart, an EWU student, received a $2,250 Dale Wilson Scholarship. Blackhart, a 1995 graduate of Ferris High School, is a sophomore majoring in psychology. She is the daughter of Elaine Syth and Bran Blackhart.

Amy Lee Johnston, a 1996 Mead High School graduate, won a $590 Ann Harder Wyatt Scholarship. She is a freshman music education student who sings with and accompanies EWU's Chamber and Symphonic choirs. She is the daughter of Dianne and Ronald Johnston. Erik Manz, a junior at Pacific Lutheran University, has been awarded a $500 scholarship from Aid Association for Lutherans. Manz is the son of Michael and Patricia Manz, Spokane. The Esther Reed Chapter of Daughters of the American Revolution honored nine area students for qualities of dependability, service, leadership and patriotism. The students and their high school are: Patricia Jayne, Reardan, Wash.; Benjamin Brattebo, West Valley; Kris Krustangel, East Valley; Jolene Strong, Riverside; Christopher Thompson, Cheney; Jason Kittredge, Liberty; Lisa Brown, Rosalia, Wash.; Sara Scales, University; and Samantha Henderson, Colville, Wash. Henderson's scholarship entry was selected for competition on the state level and the opportunity for additional awards. Samuel Smith, president of Washington State University since 1985, has been named one of the "100 Most Powerful People in Sports" by The Sporting News magazine. Smith, chairman of the National Collegiate Athletic Association's presidents commission, was ranked 54th. It's the first time he has been included as one of sport's top power brokers. Two area poets have had their work published in "Amidst the Splendor," an anthology compiled by The National Library of Poetry. The poets and their works are: Melanie Kempff, Greenacres, whose poem is titled, "Sometimes When a Baby Dies." Adam Olp, a junior at Cheney High School, wrote the poem, "The Ebbing Tide." Whitworth College has announced the names of students who qualifyied for its Laureate Society for the fall semester. Qualifying Inland Northwest students and their hometowns are: Chattaroy: Amanda Amsden, Bethany Grove and Emily Nordhagen. Colbert: Steven Klopsch and Thomas Shook. Elk: Brandon Campea. Fairchild: Kristin Olson. Greenacres: Sheila Maak and Shelly Maak. Liberty Lake: Amy Bartow and Jennifer Bartow. Mead: Carl Adams, Greggory Amend, Amy Clark, Deborah McDonald, Keith Pennock and Jeremy Whelham. Spokane: Erin Cole, Katelyn Allers, Mindy Anderson, Jolene Balyeat, Anna Beard, Kara Billingsley, Paula Cote, Bethany Cowger, Chad Dahl, Alyson Davis, Marcell Faller, Eric Fechter, Carrie Fries, Sara Glenn, Grant Goins, Catlin Goodrow, Sarah Guske, Jennifer Heaton, Duane Hille, Jenny Hutchens, Gregory A. Johnson and Gregory W. Johnson. Kimmerly Johnson, Gregory, Jones, Kevin Kee, Heather Krebs, Christiane Lang, Randall Larsen, Peter Little, Mark Lupton, Jennifer Magennis, Katherine Marr, Alexander Mitchell, Wendi Noll and Andrea Palpant.
