something for the weekend The Lodge on Loch Lomond, Luss

Jim Smith

Why?

You should see Loch Lomond in winter.

Splashing about in the water may be off the agenda but there 's loads to do: play golf, climb Ben Lomond, explore, beach yourself at Lomond Shores or just relax.

Postcard potential The lodge hotel is tucked in at the back of Luss, a village which claims to be "Scotland 's prettiest", and a fine place for a stroll, even on the dreichest of days. Each room boasts beautiful views across the water to Ben Lomond and, nestled right down on the loch 's shoreline, you get the impression you 're on a little island.

Fabulousness We stayed in the Cuillin suite. Two leather sofas, a balcony, a living flame gas fire, 42ins plasma screen TV and DVD player with surround sound all make this a cosy hideaway. Even the bathroom aids your relaxation with an automated water supply panel which pours a perfect bath for you at the touch of a button, and a musical sink that chimes out quietly when water strikes it, making face-washing lots of fun.

Gut feelings Onfirst impression the restaurant, Colqohoun 's, seems to be an upmarket Beefeater, clad in pine with a mezzanine bar and quite an open-plan layout, but any similarity to a motorway eaterie ends there.

The hotel 's two AA rosette award-winning restaurant celebrates fresh local produce and superb service, from lobster ravioli to roast saddle of wild venison. Everything we ordered was simply sublime, and the breakfast buffet includes the world 's the finest potato scones.

Doorstep challenge With the newly opened spa facilities on offer . . . from the ubiquitous steam room to a lesserseen laconium . . . there 's no need to leave the hotel, but we opted for Queen Elizabeth Forest Park and the Achray Forest Drive. Seven miles of winding forest road afford superb views towards the Trossachs and takes in three lochs, each more beautiful than the last.

From 53.50 in a Graham room in winter, to 164.50 for the Cuillin suite in high season.
